March is About Women
Between Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, March is a great time to celebrate the women who inspire us, challenge us, and lead the way. Nearly 50% of IACMI’s leadership is female, and three of the women on our Workforce Development team have a combined 100 years of experience.

SAMPE 2023 Provides Great Opportunity For IACMI to Convene with Industry Experts
(Just ask Brian Rice)
As Technical Program Co-Chair for SAMPE 2023, Brian Rice is in his element and can’t wait to engage face-to-face with top industry leaders and innovators in Seattle April 17-20. And, it’s easy to see why. He’s spent 30+ years conducting and directing research and development programs relating to the processing, characterization, and application development for advanced polymers and composites.
“SAMPE 2023 is not only the premier advanced materials and process engineering conference and exhibition in North America; it's the only technical conference and expo dedicated to advanced materials and processes,” says Brian, Distinguished Research Engineer at University of Dayton Research Institute and IACMI’s Technical Director for High Rate Aerostructures & Compress Gas Storage.
“For IACMI, SAMPE 2023 provides a great opportunity to convene with industry experts who want to connect with us, so we can catalyze growth and innovation in the industries we serve.”
Look for Brian and IACMI leaders, as well as many IACMI members, next month at SAMPE 2023. IACMI will have a display at N31.

ICYMI: DOE Announces $30 Million for Materials & Manufacturing to Lower Costs of Large Wind Turbines
As announced in our February newsletter, Department of Energy (DOE) has a $30 million funding opportunity to advance the cost-effective domestic manufacturing of materials, including lightweight composites, that allow wind turbines to produce power more efficiently. Because wind energy is the largest source of renewable power in the United States and one of the most affordable sources of energy today, it is a critical tool for reducing our reliance on fossil energy, and next-generation technologies and manufacturing improvements will help bring down costs even more.
Applicants for this funding opportunity are required to submit projects that focus on one of the following topic areas:
- Large Wind Blade Additive Manufacturing
- Additive Manufacturing of Non-Blade Wind Turbine Components
- Large Wind Blades: Advancing Manufacturing, Materials, and Sustainability
The estimated period of performance for the award will be two to three years. Concept papers are due March 23, 2023, at 5 P.M. ET.
IACMI Members who wish to learn more should email Cliff Eberle.

IACMI SkillCrafters Make Polymer Magic
“Now, this is cool!” That’s eighth grader Isabella’s response as she performed a little polymer magic – piercing a balloon with a wooden skewer. Isabella joined 28 of her classmates from Coalfield Middle School in Tennessee last month on a field trip to an IACMI creator lab in Knoxville. IACMI has teamed up with Junior Achievement of East Tennessee to educate and inspire the next generation of leaders about composites. Coalfield School STEM Teacher Matt Jones gave the SkillCrafters event an A+. The field trip scored high marks from the students, too.
