Designing, Machining, & Racing Composite Drones
“I’ve learned if something breaks, it’s actually a good thing,” laughs Cheng Lor from Charlotte, North Carolina. “If it breaks, you can see how you should change it and make it better. Whether it works or fails, it's a learning process.” That’s one of the take-aways from the ACE CNC Composites Workshop led by Dr. Uday Vaidya a few weeks ago where participants got to design, machine, and race composite drones.
This no cost, week-long America’s Cutting Edge (ACE) workshop at the Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility on the UT campus was designed to be an introduction to composites machining.

IACMI SuRF Host Public Universities from across U.S.
IACMI SuRF and LIFT hosted nearly 150 leaders from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) August 3. Both Manufacturing USA Institutes are driving innovation in manufacturing by collaborating with industry, academia, and government in their shared manufacturing scale-up facility in Detroit.
Milan Ephraim from the APLU was all smiles talking about her experience. “I feel like I’m getting the wonder of seeing how things are made. Honestly, I’m already on board.” She explained why bringing leaders from all over the country is so important. “It’s expanding our members’ knowledge about what happens in the Detroit area and what is possible through the partnerships with the universities and government. This is a perfect confluence to see what investment in the community does not just for propelling innovation but also for community jobs.”
IACMI SuRF is managed by Michigan State University, an APLU member, and led by Raymond Boeman. SuRF was established with support from Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Advanced Manufacturing Office.
